I have fielded a question from a very upset expert in edge tuning that my instruction video shows me tuning my slalom skis with the wax still on them.
Yes this is not ideal and in theory it could mean that the tuning angle is offset by the wax height.
However…
First of all: This edge tuning tool is marketed to normal skiers that just want a plesant day in the slopes not experts tuning slalom skies by the thousands every year.
Second: While designing this tool I assumed that people are lazy and won’t use a sickle and remove all the wax before starting to sharpen their edges. This is why the tool have this strange surface that faces the ski. This enables it to bite trough the wax and with a few strokes redeuces the problem to almost zero. Good enough in other words!
For a perfect result the wax should be removed but me personally, well I can’t tell the difference.
The product itelf you can find in 88 degree version for normal skiers here and as a 87 degree version for advanced skiers (better bite and more “nervous” skies)
